How I Quit: Karen K.
Age: 29, from Lafayette Parish
I made the decision that 2014 would be a year that I would focus on my health. I’m 29 years old and want to lead a healthy lifestyle. The first choice I made was to quit smoking. I started Chantix in December of 2013 and set my quit date. December 19, 2013 started a new journey for me. Chantix worked for me, but after a few weeks I noticed side effects that I was concerned about. With the advice of my doctor, I stopped taking Chantix, but have continued on the no smoking journey. Today I celebrate 3 months of being smoke free. I never in a million years thought I could do this and stick to it. Each day is a new day and each day gets a little easier. What’s made this time a success is very simple. I made the decision to quit smoking. No one else made it for me. All of the quit smoking adds, ex smokers telling me that I should quit, even my doctor telling me all of the scary statistics didn’t work. I had to make the decision for myself. When I go to bed after another successful day, reach a new milestone, or even just make it through a situation that would usually include a cigarette, I do a little happy dance. My decision to be smoke free was the best decision I’ve made in my life.
