How I Quit: Courtney T.

Age: 34, from Lafayette Parish

I decided to join my church in a corporate fast, the Daniel Fast, where only fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains are allowed to be eaten. The fast is 21 days in duration, and prohibits coffee, tea, artificial sweeteners, meat and processed foods. I figured that I would give the fast my all, and decided to abstain from smoking during the fast. Having been a smoker for 20 years, minus one year to have a child, I had every intention to smoke again after the fast was over. Two days into the fast, and after severe headaches, I had an extreme moment of weakness and smoked a cigarette. I was so disappointed in myself, and ashamed of my weakness, that I hid it from my husband, who was also a smoker. The fourth day into the fast the same thing happened, except I only smoked half of the cigarette, but still hid it from my husband. The fifth day into the fast my desire to smoke was completely gone. Not only did God give me the strength to continue the fast, he took my desire to smoke completely away…forever! It has been over a year since I have been smoke-free, and I know I will never smoke again. All glory to God! Fasting was what worked for me, but the program will work for anyone. All you need is the desire and a little sacrifice at first, and the rest will be taken care of for you.
